Stay On Top Of Your Game With These Grooming Trends 2021

Here are some grooming trends to familiarise yourself with.

Last year was challenging for all of us, lockdown, another lockdown and another. Changing times called for changing measures and personal care became one of the new norms. Spas and barbers were closed everywhere and we were forced to become our own hairstylists and skincare therapists (well for me at least).

All the extra time in lockdown allowed me to step up my grooming game. In my opinion men are now more keen to experiment with new skincare trends — paying greater attention to building a solid grooming routine. It all starts with cultivating new grooming habits and doing them every day.

I would like to share some grooming trends for the up-coming year, adapt them, and experiment with them. Just keep one thing in mind, stick to a skincare routine that works for you and your budget and never compromise on looking after yourself. After doing some research and talking to industry experts— here are 5 trends you can play with.

Experiment with Scents

Gender-neutral fragrances might be the future scents in your grooming cabinet. We’re living in a world that is increasingly becoming more genderfluid, and many designer brands have adapted to this trend. Look at CK, Gucci, Louis Vuitton — creating fragrances without labelling them. But there is literally nothing you can’t wear in the fragrance world right now. Whether you feel like crossing over to more floral accents and women wearing more woodier notes. My female friends are always raiding my fragrance cupboard and end up smelling like me. Whatever your preferences — just wear the hell out of it.

Bringing Back the Mo

In my opinion anyone can don a moustache. Two popular styles coming up this year is the beardstache (a hybrid where the moustache is fuller than the surrounding hair on your face) or the pencil moustache (a minimalist take on the fuller moustache). When the styles are done right they ooze sexiness and show others that you have an experimental side. It’s the perfect lightweight alternative to a full beard in summer. But do think about whether a moustache fits with your personal style before committing.

Wearing SPF Daily — Come Summer or Winter - new it product

My advice is to find a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 30 and wear it daily with your moisturise or on its own. Cape Town Dermatologist, Dr Dagmar Whitaker firmly believes that sunscreen is the start to better looking skin. I generally love a tinted moisturiser with an SPF for my face and a sunscreen spray for my body. Not only does wearing a daily SPF fend off wrinkles-causing UV damage, it can  actually help erase signs of aging.

Minimalist Grooming

One formula offering two or more benefits is music to my ears. It’s not a new concept but they are certainly gaining popularity as most men like to shrink their daily grooming routines. Multi-functional products are definitely favourable in my cabinet and serve you well if you are an avid traveller or want to cut down on your grooming routine without compromising results. For example: BB creams that gives both corrective and skincare benefits or a facial cleanser that serves as a wash and shaving cream. This minimalist trend will be big in the coming year. Invest in multi-functional products with ingredients targeted for your skincare concerns.

Blue Light Protection

As a result of the global pandemic, just about everything in our lives has turned digital. Now skincare companies are discovering more innovative ingredients that can help combat these effects. Optiphi has always strived to stay abreast of the latest technology and advances in skincare. By incorporating actives to not only protect the skin from visible blue light, but also infra-red radiation in their sun protection products says Stephnie-Anne Dickinson, Head of Training for Optiphi.
